Whether it was the American Revolutionary War, the Civil War, or the Golden Age of Piracy, one of the favorite weapons during the 17th, 18th and much of the 19th century was the saber. The weapon was both sword and shield: a vicious blade at one end, a hilt on the other. The blade was short enough to be swung recklessly and wide enough to do real damage when it hit. The hilt provided excellent hand protection and could even be used as a small shield. The curved blade allowed for fast, efficient cutting.
