Whether it was the “Brown Bess” of the American Revolutionary War or the “Springfield Musket” of the Civil War, the most important Army weapon during the 18th and much of the 19th century was the musket. Muskets of this period were about five feet in length, muzzle loaded, and fired a large caliber lead ball using gunpowder. This musketball serves as a reminder of American struggle and the role that the musket played in our nation’s history.
