During the Revolutionary War, drummers in the Continental Army marched bravely into the fight with nothing but their sticks to protect them. The army used fifes and drums not only to boost morale but also for communication. Drum signals were used in battle to direct troops and to call for medical assistance. In camp, drums also told soldiers when to wake up, fetch wood or provisions, and show up for church.
