An inspiring and monumental residence, the White House is a highly respected symbol of the American presidency. Begun in 1792 and completed in 1800, each United States president since John Adams has lived here. Though burned by the British during the War of 1812, restored, and then remodeled in 1902 and 1948, the exterior of the White House still maintains its original appearance.
