Standing as a majestic monument and impressive symbol of our nation’s government, bills are passed and American laws are made within the hallowed halls of the United States Capitol. President Washington himself laid the cornerstone on September 18, 1793; and though the building was formally completed in 1827, wings and a cast iron dome were added by 1863, and marble replaced a sandstone façade in 1960.
